PTTEP launches Short Film Competition Campaign for university students

6 Aug 2018

Bangkok, August 6, 2018 - PTT Exploration and Production Public Company Limited (PTTEP) encourages university students across Thailand to take part in the short film competition campaign under “Knowledge Propels the People, Energy Propels the Nation” theme. The activity is held on the occasion of 25th anniversary of Bongkot gas field, the first offshore petroleum exploration and production field operated by a Thai company. With years of accumulated knowledge and experience in petroleum exploration and production, passed on from one generation to the next.  Bongkot came to resemble a living institution for learning. The competition also aims to create awareness and appreciation amongst youth of the importance of E&P knowledge in strengthening energy security of Thailand. The application is open from August 6 to September 15, 2018 to win prizes worth over 200,000 Baht. The winners will also have great opportunities in real filming experiences and become interns in a famous advertising agency.

Ms. Sopitta Chotechuang, Vice President for Communications Department, PTTEP revealed that the mission of PTTEP is not only to ensure the nation’s energy security, but also to pass the wisdom in petroleum exploration, development, and production down to the younger generations. To turn this mission into a tangible action, PTTEP launches this short film competition under the theme “Knowledge Propels the People, Energy Propels the Nation” with cooperation from experts in the film and advertising industries. PTTEP is now encouraging university students to participate in the competition and learn about the film production as well as the Bongkot gas field, a crucial energy source playing the vital role in driving Thailand’s economy and society.

“PTTEP believes in the knowledge transfer because knowledge becomes more valuable when it is passed down to others. Eventually, benefits will be for the society and the country at large. University students applying for the competition will learn about capacities of the Thai E&P company in promoting efficient and sustainable energy development, especially at the Bongkot field, which has supplied our country with natural gas for 25 years. We look forward to seeing the many creative ways in which our young contestants capture the essence of the mission and so convince the audience that only when E&P knowledge is in the hands of the Thai people will Thailand be truly and sustainably energy secure.” said Ms. Sopitta.

Another highlight of this short film competition is the opportunity for the participants to attend a special workshop hosted by Mr. Wittaya Tongyuyong, Ball, a famous film director, who will share his experiences and knowledge in film production so that they can capture the entire filming process with understanding of how to produce the attractive educational movies.

Mr. Wittaya Tongyuyong or Ball, the Film Director,
said that while researching for information to prepare for the contest and working with PTTEP, he was deeply impressed with the work and life of PTTEP staff carrying out their missions offshore. It might sound like an ideal career, but in reality, those people there have to shoulder a vital responsibility of transporting the natural gas to the land without making any mistakes. It is a high - pressure roles with great responsibility.

“Before this, I did not know that Thai people were up to the task, and we don’t keep the knowledge just for ourselves. We pass the knowledge down to next generations. The knowledge transfer is in fact the process of creating and improving it for countless times until Thai people can explore, develop, and produce petroleum by ourselves. It is incredible, but we’ve never heard of this before. Therefore, this contest will be a great opportunity for youths to become a part of the knowledge transfer mission and tell these stories to others,” said the film director.

Mr. Wittaya added that in the first round, contestants have to produce a storyboard that feature shots of 3 mandatory inspirational items related to working in the Bongkot field. The items are 1) the coverall suit, representing the duties of all staff members at the Bongkot field who work continually to deliver natural gas for the country, 2) the safety helmet, representing pride in ensuring national energy security, and 3) the picture of the Bongkot field, conveying a message that the field is also considered as the school of energy exploration and production in Thailand, which transfers knowledge from generation to generation.

In the final round, the 8 selected teams will join a film production workshop, where they will learn and gain experiences in film production directly from Mr. Wittaya and his colleagues. From this point, a storyboard will become a short film, ready to enter the final round and stand a chance to become the winner.

Mr. Sompat Trisadikun, Creative Director, the Leo Burnett Group Thailand, stated “Competitions have different challenges, but this contest has special challenges in particular.  The contestants have to make films under many conditions and requirements which are similar to real life work. After going through all activities in this competition, I believe that the contestants are well prepared for a certain level to face the real world of the film industry.
